To mark the celebration of International Safety Week, the Association of Carriers and Equipment Lessors (ACEL) offered a webInar on rigging last May 12, 2021. Held online via the Zoom platform, the session was conducted by Clemente Rey A. Dorosan, regional sales manager and product trainer of the Crosby Group, in partnership with Benedicto Steel Corporation.
Entitled the “Fundamentals of Rigging,” the three-hour webinar attracted 163 participants from 15 companies. Of these, eight were ACEL member-companies, four were members of the Association’s chapters, and three were non-member firms. In addition, there were five individuals who joined. The session offered continuing professional development (CPD) points to mechanical and civil engineers who attended.
Right from the start, Dorosan, a veteran trainer who has more than 13 years’ experience conducting seminars of this kind in the Middle East, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, North Africa and Southeast Asia, made very clear the objective of the session. “Hoisting and rigging operations present a serious hazard to the workplace,” he said. “Accidents can happen while operating or working with or around these types of equipment if the operators/riggers do not recognize or anticipate the potential dangers associated with the particular task.”
“It is, therefore, important that all responsible individuals know the specific guidelines for identifying, monitoring, evaluating and training personnel who must work on or around mechanized equipment and hoisting and rigging operations,” he pointed out.
The highly successful webinar focused on rigging basics and principles, loads and rigging triangle, application of hardware, and application of slings.
In line with its mission of helping professionalize the Philippine construction industry, ACEL regularly holds similar technical seminars. In fact, these sessions have become standard offerings in the yearly Philconstruct events where they have come to be known as “technoforums.”
Recognized as the country’s premier construction industry event, Philconstruct is a project of the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) with ACEL as a co-organizer. It is actually a series of trade shows that usually starts in Luzon, followed by stagings in Cebu and Davao, and then culminates in a grand expo in Metro Manila which is attended by the construction industry’s movers and shakers. The Metro Manila leg gathers hundreds of leading suppliers who showcase their latest products and services as well as thousands of trade buyers and construction industry players who want to be updated on the newest technologies and breakthroughs.
